Kaiser Chiefs live in Singapore

Time after time, Singapore seems to get the limelight from foreign artists and my beloved country Malaysia is still with its 'protective-mindset' not to allow bad influence. But really, what is bad influence in music anyway? (i'll leave this to another post).

Anyways... Kaiser Chiefs will be at Fort Canning, Singapore on 7 April right after their V festival in Australia. So Malaysians...get your passport ready yeah.

I've decided to add a little more spunk to this blog. From now on, I'll be sharing my 2 cents worth of a 'power song' each month. What's a 'power song' you ask? Well, I'll put it this way...a track that's somewhat revolutionized the music industry over time (be it classics or modern), or a track that has affected lives of many (socially, politically) or on a lighter side, songs that have been covered numerously by various artists.

For November, it's Black Betty! A song that some might vouch, has been around ever since the 1930s. There has been 21 cover versions of this song and yet no definite interpretation of what the song exactly means. Some sources say it's about a lady and her child, and some say its about a bottle of whisky (a common term used in England/Scotland).

Well, whatever it means, the song's got 'life'. It makes a good motivation song for designers, writers, and for the gym even. Many favour the version done by Ram Jam. For me...the bomb's the one from Spiderbait.

Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Vanwyngarden form this trippy-funky-rocky-like genre called MGMT. What does MGMT mean? Well, they originally called themselves Management, but opted for MGMT instead. Formed in 2002 in New York, these lads' sounds are recognizable anywhere - the sounds of what's called Electronic Indie Dance Rock (E.I.D.R). You may have heard one of their tracks in the movie 21, called "Time to Pretend". My current favourite - "Kids" which kinda gives me that 80's almost Depeche Mode like feel.

Very worth checking out.

Well, all I know is that according to The Observer she began her career with Gospel Songs and both her parents are Protestant pastors. Which came unexpected to me really, looking at her musical direction that paints kissing a girl and liking it, waking up in Vegas after a wild night.

Nevertheless, I'm just hooked to some of the tunes from this las. Can't get enough of Hot & Cold.

Malaysia to ban another concert?

I really can't digress as to why Malaysia is getting uptight about concerts in Malaysia. First it was Christina Aguilera, then it was Beyonce, then the Pussycat Dolls were slapped a fine for some sort of obscenity. And now... Avril Lavigne? You gotta be kidding me!

With all due respect to Malaysia trying to protect 'our children' but hey, don't you think they get that so called 'bad influence' by watching that artist's MTV? Oh please don't ban TV too!

Among other artists that were vying for the Bond theme limelight were Beyonce, Duffy, Amy Winehouse and Annie Lenox.

Personally, I feel that bad girl Winehouse would suit a Bond tune more.

I remember my juvie days when I mentioned to a friend that if I ever came up with an album, I'd give it away for free. And that's what exactly Nine Inch Nails are doing with their latest album, The Slip - their 3rd album in 6 months following Ghosts I-IV and Year Zero.

The Offspring - An Album After Close to 5 Years

"Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace" seems to be one of the most highly downloaded torrents that I came across today. I can only hope that The Offspring has left their commercial hits like Pretty Fly for a White Guy 'smashed' and buried.

Almost 5 years of absence, and Dexter and the boys are finally out with an eighth studio album, produced by the master Bob Rock (Metallica, Motley Crue, The Cult, Skid Row).

Alright. Here's the lowdown on each track.
1) Half-Truism
Sounds patriotic with that oh so sweet sound of The Offspring
2) Trust in You
Nice guitar playing by Noodles, putting some nice effects to good use. it's got that familiar sounds from the Smash album.
3) You're Going Far, Kid
Doesn't really sound like a typical track from Offspring but sure sounds 'moshing'
4) Hammerhead
This sounds like The Offspring i know, what's odd is there's a part where Dexter sounds like STP in Big Bang Baby. Love the intro. A song about war for sure - "I am the one camouflaged in guns, risk my life to keep my people from harm"
5) A Lot Like Me
A bad idea for the intro and verse. Trying something new with the piano?
6) Takes Me Nowhere
Don't think this track will take them anywhere

7) Kristy Are You Okay?
This one has commercial value
8) Nothingtown
It's a sing-a-long song
9) Stuff is Messed Up
I have no idea why, but when they start going "lalalala..la.." it reminds me of Marilyn Manson
10) Fix You
Going sentimental now are we?

Very fresh, very nice. Love that fuck ala 311 verse riff

All in all, I wished they had riffs that stood out more. But I'll have to say, the band did discover themselves 'cuz they really sound different in this one. I'll buy this legally anyday!

The Cheesy lyrics are getting moldy

I was on the way to work today, and the 'oh-gosh-he's-so-hot' Chris Brown's 'With You' was playing on the car stereo. At first, yeah, tune was easy listening but when it came to part of a song when he sang "..."cause if I got you, I don't need money, I don't need cars..." I immediately switched to another station.

Point here is, why are artists still using such cheesy lines? I could understand that lyrics sort of have a creative license of exegeration, but puke puke man, when it comes to same old cheesy lines - "i'd die for you", "i don't need money if I had you" - you wouldn't be by the girl of your dreams if you died to begin with...you wouldn't have enough money to buy a decent meal for yourself let alone a date if you didn't need money.

Honestly, I hope the day would come when artist or songwriters write lyrics that open a refreshing thought and not serve listeners with 'moldy cheese'.

14 Years without Kurt Cobain

I still reminisce the times i first picked up my guitar...the first song i ever played on a 6-string was 'About a Girl'. Then came 'Come as you Are', 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', 'Lithium'....the list goes on. Nirvana was an inspiration to many. They were the cause of our embrace to the Grunge Era, and poetry.

On 5th April 1994, 14 years ago...we were shocked when we heard the news. He was gone. He left us. His pain was unbearable. But here's to you Kurt...we raise our axes and salute you as you rock the heck out of the angels.

Earth Hour - What are you doing about it?

Right on! Earth Hour is tomorrow, and what are you gonna do to help make a point that Global Warming is a serious issue? For me, I'm planning to shut of the lights and play Sound of Silence on my guitar. And I will try...try....to not smoke for an hour.

I guess the song suits the moment...a moment when each one of us, strangers to each other, across borders are united for a sole cause. A moment, for just one hour, actually making a huge impact just by doing nothing.

My night with the stars of Sunburst (Part 2)

Well, it wasn't really just MY night with the stars. It was probably shared with around 15,000 music fans. 15th March 2008 at Sunburst Music Festival will probably be memorable to many. I know mine was, not only because I had the wonderful company of my friends, but also had a Paparazzi Pass that allowed me to get closer to the stages. And adding more exclusivity to my night, I had a meet and greet with Incubus right before they performed. Now, I'm no groupie but I wouldn't pass off an opportunity like that!

Now...the performances... Incubus was excellent although I did feel that this would be their last performance in Malaysia ever. Why? He went from shirt to singlet, and singlet to topless. Now, now...Malaysia doesn't allow that! I'm pretty sure, the oganisers got that message across to them right? So, I'm thinking they probably just don't give a f**k anymore here. Despite the fact that the entire Sunburst schedule was delayed and they sure didn't look all bright and sunny at the press con right before their performance. I love these guys...but if this really was the case...shame on us for making our guests feel how they did.

Nonetheless, John Legend was a good performance - he grabbed someone up on stage, thankfully without a boner this time. From the local platter, Reza Salleh put on a wonderful performance, introducing himself several times to the crowd (Reza, we know you by now!). Che'nelle ... well... I'm no big fan...but she sings so close like she does on record, one would question if she lip syncs. Meet Uncle Hussein was a crowd pleaser to some, with Era FM announcers giving away free t-shirts right before the performance.

Off stage, I'd say the ambiance was great. The setup of the Tuborg beer garden, the fire juggling performances, and the food by Planet Hollywood, it was all good work.

My night with the stars of Sunburst (Part 1)

Fantastic! Even before the event, it was FANtastic (pun intended). I was privileged to have Tuborg invite me to a pre-event-closed-door party with the artists of Sunburst, a night before the event at the Ritz Carlton KL. It was a little cocktail party for invited guests to meet and greet local celebs and the Sunburst artists, as well as have a sneak peek of what would be in store for us the next day at the music festival itself.

I was so eager to meet Incubus but sadly, only managed to see Dj Chris Killmore and not the rest of the band. George Clinton was recognisable through his cool braids. John Legend was there for a bit (he's not as tall as I expected him to be).

But that night really made me realise that in this time and generation, the Malaysian music scene really has the potential. Two names i give you now, to look out for in the coming years - Reza Salleh and Yuna.

Reza Salleh is no stranger to the local music scene, thanks to his contribution to Laundry Bar's Moonshine music show. But who interests me the most is Yuna. She has sounds so very similar to Corrine Bailey Rae + Frente. I might be setting high expectations here, but this is really one talent to look out for. I had a few minutes with her to find out about her future plans. Sadly, she's not looking to be recording anytime soon due to studies. go check out Yuna's myspace.

All in all, it was a good start for the event of the year and most definitely a memorable experience for me. Here's a shoutout to Siao Ling and Chui Hoon for making all this happen.

Sunburst KL 08 - The Fun Starts Tomorrow!

Just one more day people! For probably the biggest music festival to actually happen on our soil. Hope all goes well with the weather tomorrow, but I doubt even a little rain would ruin it...in fact, it'll just make the mosh-pit even more exciting yeah? I wonder though, if there'll be "discounted drinks" from Tuborg (I know I might be sidetracking a little here, but the new tuborg...definitely better than a Heini anytime). Anyways, with all this artists coming down, I'm sure the media people would have loads to write about assuming they have backstage passes (So cool wan!).

Oh yeah most importantly, here's an updated copy of the Sunburst Music Festival KL 2008 schedule. Pick when to come see your artists or better yet, just be there from the start till the end... bring a mat, an umbrella, an extra t-shirt, friends and have a fun time.

Get Facebooked by R.E.M's new album

We've seen Radiohead revolutionize the ways of launching and sharing its last album. Now, even local band Butterfingers are going digital with their upcoming album, probably to cut a whole lot of cost on CD printing/packaging and distributionship costs.

Gone are the days of traditional radio premieres of an album release. And look whose next to jump on the bandwagon...R.E.M.

Their new album, Accelerate will be officially launched April 1, 2008 but before that, would actually debut on social networking sites with the iLike application (yes, that includes Facebook). Facebook members will be able to stream and share the album beginning March 24 people! So jot that down on your post-it notes folks. You'll also gain access to exclusive footage of the band talking about their album.

So, watch out for this legendary band's 14th album.

The Revival of Butterfingers

The boys are back and the word's out that Butterfingers will be releasing their new album come July this year. Specifically, the launch would be on 060708 (I think its due to Loque's studies back in the States who will only return to Malaysia then to promote the album).

This time around, from a source at www.royalbutterfingers.net, the album would be distributed via the internet. Still have no idea if it's a malay skewed or english skewed album...either way it goes, I'm sure most of us will anticipate a rocking Butterfingers album.

Now, some have brought up thoughts that this is a 'scary video' - a girl starts stripping down outdoors, burns her fur coat, pulls out a shovel and stabs a dude who is in the car trunk (was that Kanye in the trunk?). Well... ain't that the sh*te. Scary and seductive it is then. Scary 'cuz you never know who you'll pick up at a bar, scary because even seduction could kill. Scary because a man's mind is weak too fall for all that.

My second post on One Republic

My last post on One Republic was two years ago on September 2006. And today...well, not today today, but a few months ago, they've finally gotten justice on the airwaves. Apologise was basically the sing-along-song for everyone.

But here's the thing. Would the band have gotten this far without the help of Timbaland? Listen to the difference between Timbaland's version of Apologise and One Republic's. All I hear the former do is just more bass and his voice that goes "ayy, ayy, ayy". Now, I know music taste is a subjective manner but honestly did that really bring One Republic where it is today?

Yes, Yes...F1 season is back and so are the F1 parties

So here we go. Formula One Race season is back and as usual, so are the F1 parties and events that just cannot part with it. It's just one of those occasions where advertisers and sponsors do the same old stuff each time we near race season (yawn!). Oh how i yearn for something new.

Anyway, let's see what's EXCITING this time round in Malaysia as we welcome the whole entourage of pit crew, drivers, engineers, etc. to Sepang come March 23, 2008.

Darker lyrics, prominent percussions and a lower key voice will be the music template for Coldplay's fourth album, due out in May, 2008. Now, question is... will this change the destiny of the band? Were they not glad about the outcome of their 'trilogy' albums? Are they certain that the fans want this new canvas of 'artistic' craft they serve?

It was a big night in London (thanks MasterCard for making it happen) where stars gathered, won, lost, dressed up, dressed down, performed and collaborated. Yup, yup! It's been conformed by Activision that Aerosmith will be featured full-out in the console game, Guitar Hero:Aerosmith come June 2008. The game will feature about 30 Aerosmith tracks as well as others from various acts that have opened for the band before. The game should be available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 2 as things develop.

Justin Timberlake is set to star in the baseball flick, The Open Road and will be working alongside Jeff Bridges(Seabiscuit), Kate Mara(Brokeback Mountain), and Mary Steenburgen(The Brave One) as a young man trying to reconnect with his father, who is a legendary athlete, as he struggles to get him home to his ailing mother.

Under the Def Jam entourage, The Roots (sometimes called The Legendary Roots Crew) will be set to entertain the crowd with some hip-hop/funk music come Sunburst KL 08. I wonder however, if they'd be performing "You Got Me" that features Erykah Badu (that may mean she's coming?). The video to that track has been put on this blog for a peek of what they sound like.

They were nominated for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance by a Duo/Group in last year's Grammy's.

I've decided to include some postings on the acts that will be performing at the Sunburst Music Festival this March. Hopefully this would help you out in deciding which 1 out of the 4 stages you would be rocking it out at.

The last time I saw Incognito was at the Panasonic Jazz Festival in Malaysia, years ago. And I gotta tell you, they've got some real groovy pieces (explains why Roger Sanchez, and David Morales have remixed some of Incognito's work)

They are a jazz/funk/soul outfit hailing from Britain that have been around for 20 years. Now, that's more years than most British acts I know of. There's probably a reason to it...we gotta watch them to know then i guess...

Sunburst KL 08 - The Fun Starts Here!

Well, well.....already claimed to be the largest outdoor multi-genre music festival, the Sunburst KL 2008 is getting much hype all over - by fellow bloggers, music fans, roadies, facebook, and just about everyone else involved with the local music scene.

How it would be nice to have a real music festival for once in Malaysia with an ala Woodstock or Big Day Out...with camping, tattoos, and whatever have you. But I guess this is the best we can do in Malaysia.

The festival (held in Bukit Kiara) on 15th March 08 will have four stages and 26 acts, and the organisers (Pineapple Concerts and Tuborg) hope to reach some 20,000 music fans.

With this lineup? I'd say it's possible but they definitely could project a better turnout if they really did finalise the deal with Velvet Revolver and Offspring to come as well.

But I am proud to say that this country is actually putting the effort in making things happen. The Fun after all can only start with the initiative of organisers. Thank you Tuborg! and Pineapple!

I came across The Album Leaf when I was reading some stuff about Explosions in the Sky (EITS). I was captivated by their work when I searched them on youtube - really amazing stuff.

The Album Leaf is actually a solo project by Jimmy LaValle who already has 4 albums up to date.

Fans of EITS and Mogwai would find his work to their liking - melodic, mellow, poetic, and deep. This post-rock/ambient/indie project simply sets you away to a dreamy realm. Good stuff.

Bristol trio Portishead back after 10 years

Radiohead's 7th album with 7 rainbow colours

I'm just amazed with the way bands market their album launches these days. Take Radiohead. Their 7th studio album, In Rainbows was released just yesterday (10th October, 2007) in digital mp3 but will be in a disc box which will have an additional CD in December ( I don't quite know what's in it yet). We'll most likely to find the album in store shelves January next year. Here's the thing folks... they ain't using any record labels but instead, released their album via their website.

Now on to the tracks, they still sound pretty experimental but one track that grabs me is 'Nude'. All in all, I love it. I love it that they're still together. I love it that Thom still has it in him.

Despite Rob Thomas having a fair share of solo stardom, I'm glad he never forgot the rest of his lads at Matchbox Twenty. Their latest album, Exile on Mainstream will be out in stores come October 2, 2007.

It's a double-disc release but with just 6 brand new tracks. The rest, well, sort of like a greatest hit thing to fill up the gaps. I mean, why not just come up with another 5 tracks and have a full album? The lead single (How far we've come) is already being played around and well, it's pretty catchy.

The welsh lads are back with their 6th studio release. Yup, after 2 years, Stereophonics are back! Frontman Kelly Jones spoke to XFM:

Probably the best I've heard from Australia after Silverchair and Powderfinger. The Silents, hail from Perth and pack a punch of garage styled psychedelic rock. Yeah, you probably never heard of these mates yet because they're still in the midst of recording their debut album which is due end of 2007. I've somehow coincidently managed to get hold of a track of theirs, 'Shock & Awe' and it blew my mind away, never expected it to come from down under! The foursome released their debut EP, Flicker and Flames in 2006 with the lead track, 'Nightcrawl'.

So, keep a lookout for Silents, it's gonna be trashy raw!

Silversun Pickups - indie with a dose of grunge

Want dreamy, melodic, stonner, grungy tunes? Get a load of the Silversun Pickups. They've become one of my favourite indie rock outfits ever since i listened to the grungy-the breeders-like song, Well Thought Out Twinkles. It's raw, has a good riff, and a real good swing to it.

Silversun Pickups (SSPU) can be heard in this season's The OC. Tracks include Lazy Eye and Rusted Wheel. According to Eric Shea of Rhapsody.online, "the Silversun Pickups rightfully garner many a comparison to alt-rock '90s heroes the Smashing Pumpkins". Their album Carnavas was released last year (2006). I'm simply hoping to hear more of them soon, after their current Spring tour with Snow Patrol.

ASH - New Album out soon!

Finally! A new album. Y'all remmeber Ash right? Ya' know, Girl From Mars, Goldfinger...yeah anyway, they've got a new album coming up. No official name mentioned yet, it's all hush hush. But Tim Wheeler has announced the lead single to be You Can't Have It All. According to him, "it's a bitch love song dealing with bi-popular emotions. It's got a really big driving bassline and the beat in the verses is almost dancey".

Another track described is Saskia which is said to have an Easter European feel to it. Also said to be inspired by the great Davis Bowie. Now, that's something I wanna listen too.

Already out in the internet is I Started A Fire which sounds well...not that bad. Was actually expecting more from 'em. But given the fact that they're a 3-piece outfit again, the fans may just forgive the lads. That's right, Charlotte Hatherley has left the boysin pursuit of her solo career.

Anywayz....i hope Ash feeds the fans a dose of kool bubble-gum songs if you'd like to call it that. But I'm glad the lads are back.

Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood goes Reggae

That's right folks. The skinny dude of Radiohead's got some Jamaican flava up his sleeves. Jonny Greenwood is the Controler is what the album's called and is due to be released March 6. The album's a compilation of 17 reggae tracks from the archives of the legendary Trojan Records.

Word on the block is that Greenwood went through a 6-month reggae crash course to prepare for this project. I've had a listen to one of his works, Delroy Wilson's This Life Makes Me Wonder. Pretty good stuff MAN!

Under Pete Wentz's (Fall Out Boy) label, Decaydance Records, this quartet has been labeled "too rock for hip-hop and too hip-hop for rock". Look's like they have a close relationship with FOB, because you can even find Patrick Stump (FOB vocal) featured on Clothes Off (Track 4) from their As Cruel As School Children album.

Rise Against! Such energy. Such passion. Such adrenaline. Such is the expression I'd give to this melodic-underground-angst-punk outfit. If this band was a brand, you know what the USPs would be? It would be the seasoned vocals that blend so well with raw guitars.

For the past 2 months, I've been listening to both their albums, The Sufferer & The Witness and Siren Song of The Counter-Culture. Boy have both the entire albums motivated me! You know how it is sometimes when there's this one or two particular tracks that just give you a push in life. A reason to go on and stuff like that. Well, this is one band that does it well for me.

Lyrically, they make one listen to the words. Musically, it just bursts with so much energy. They kinda remind me of the earlier days of Offspring's Smash album. Yeah, it's that kinda energy! Those who have played Need For Speed Underground would be familiar with their hit song, Give it All, a track packed with adrenaline.

All in all, this is one fantastic band. Thumbs up for sure!

Well, how about it? A band with 2 vocalists, uses the laptop as part of their equipment, loads of screaming and drumming that seems as if the drummer was in a hurry to get to the loo. This is Seattle based band, The Blood Brothers.

These guys have pretty hard stuff. Some tunes got me off fine. Some were just too much for me to digest. Check out their album, Young Machetes and see if you can handle it.

Flyleaf makes beautiful rock

Flyleaf is one outfit that rocks my world! They're loud, a pinch dark, melodious, and raw. Headed by rock chick Lacey Mosley, she delivers songs that carry a positive message although it's musically brought across as heavy. Medium-to-heavey actually. So, to all you pop people out there...rock is not always about death!

Flyleaf's self titled debut album echoes songs about abuse, neglect, addiction and dysfunction, and messages about overcoming adversity. Take f or example the lyrics from Fully Alive:

Telling layla's story spoken,
About how all her bones are broken,
hammers fall on all the peices,
two months in the cover creases,

Fully alive, more than most
ready to smile and love life.
Fully alive and she knows,
How to believe in futures.

What does 'flyleaf' actually mean? A flyleaf is ablank page at the front of a book. It's a dedication page, the place you write a message to someone you're giving a book to. According to Mosley, that's what their songs are about - a personal message that provide a few moments of clarity before the story begins.

Scarlett Johansson to sing?

That’s right! Yet another film star is having a go at musical stardom. Is it so easy these days? We've seen Hillary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, and *gulp* David Hasslehoff! Now Scarlett? I mean, a basketballer can’t actually be good in baseball can he? There’s no offence to you MJ.

But anyway, Scarlett Johansson is already said to be working on her debut album, Scarlett Sings Tom Waits. Yes, the singer-songwriter Tom Waits who’s responsible for the hit, Ole '55 which the Eagles covered So, little miss beautiful intends to do a cover album of Tom Waits. It’s not gonna be easy, gal! But if she does cut it, she might as well be the perfect celebrity who can sing, act and seduce the fans!

Incubus' 5th Studio Album - 28 November, 2006

Brandon Boyd and the boys have always gained good praises for their sense of alternative rock. I was so delighted to hear that Incubus are at it again with their latest release, Light Grenades, due 28 November.

They've had 3 years of absence and I'll be expecting a whole damn lotta adrenaline rushing songs from them.

Guitarist, Mike Einziger said in an interview with MTV, "...it sounds like 13 different bands playing 13 different songs."

Alright, to some fans, that may sound like a dissapointment. But come on, maybe they won't be way too experimental. They've done so well with the freedom the fans have given them. Their first single, Anna Molly sounds damn good. The music video is even better (it should be playing on the right side of the main page).

The marriage of guitar-violin works and her sweet vocals are perfect. The whole album gives me a feeling of bedroom-made songs. It's like 'dreamy' in a sense. Oh, and there’s a Hokkien track to! Good stuff. Out in stores now.

My favourite tracks are Nuan Nuan" (暖暖), Xing Fu Yang Guo Zi Dian" (幸福洋菓子店), and Fei Yu" (飛魚).

Ryan Star to perform in Kuala Lumpur

Wo Wo Wo Wo. Ryan 'The Darkhorse' Star rides down to KL, Malaysia this November 16, 2006 with his swordlike vocals. The man who rocked the socks out of Supernova is set to rock its Malaysian fans at Zouk. Pretty small scale huh? I expect to see loads of chicks flocking over to catch a glimpse of dear Ryan.

This is probably one of the few recent bands that have caught my attention due to their dynamic musicality and drummer boy beats and simple riffs (even though it may sound a little mainstream).

My Chemical Romance first got my interest when I listened to Helena sometime back. And now, I'm eager to see what they have to offer with a new album from their popish like couldron of so called darkness - The Black Parade is due October 24 on Reprise Records.

I'm not sure what to expect but their single, Welcome to the Black Parade sounds like a decent song. The Black Parade has been rumoured to have offended some people due to its racist conotation. But come on...did anyone sue Johnnie Walker with its BLACK LABEL?

Part of the lyrics from Oklohoma's vey own Hinder hit - Lips of an Angel which is receiving good response in the airwaves now. Lead by charismatic leadman, Austin Winkler, Hinder is aiming at bringing rock back to life. Honsetly, we need it. Enough showboaters. It's about time someone did something about it. And I gotta hand it to these five lads...they actually took a personal loan just to record their stuff. Talk about dedication!

Fans of bands like Default, Seether, and Buckcherry would probably be receptive towards Hinder's offerings which was released 2 days ago on 27 September 2006 under the Universal label. Notable tracks are Get Stoned, Room 21, and my personal favourite Lips of an Angel.

Ryan Hui follows father's footsteps

Son of Sam (Sam Hui that is) , Ryan Hui is out with his solo album entitled RYANEP. Now, what really got me interested into reviewing this lad was actually his japanase sleeve tatoo (saw it in a magazine) so I figured, we hardly see canto singers with exposed tats, so why not review Ryan). His EP was released 10 August 2006 and he's currently doing shows around Hong Kong, more details can be found at his site: www.ryanhuimusic.com.

Well, from what I've listened - In My Mind is mind blowing in a sense that it has that Greenday like riff and melody. You know, the muted riffs in verses and full fledged distortion guitarworks in the Chorus. If you ask me, it's got that Western touch to it.

On Her Own is a little mainstream, ballad-like number. I won't be surprised if this is already a favourite. Nice violins at the background. But somehow, the energy of Ryan's voice can't be felt.

Another number - Black Clouds... I like the indie feel to it. Sounds a little Taking Back Sunday woithout the screams.

All in all, pretty good stuff.

OneRepublic. Ever heard of 'em?

I was doing a search on some bands and I came across this wonderful track which had a beautiful riff and warm lyrics. It was from a band called OneRepublic and the track's called Mercy and starts of like this:

"Angel of Mercy, how did you find me? Where did you read my story? Pull from the paper, desperate and hardened, seeking a momentary fix"

Now how would lyrics like that not stop your curiosity of listening on, especially when it's got great music backing it. So I carried on listening to this band's other tracks - All We Are, Apologize, Goodby Apathy, and Stop and Stare. Most of them were beautiful, simply beautiful. They were songs of hope, frustration and despair.

Fans of U2, The Fray, and Keane would probably love the sounds of OneRepublic. Check 'em out at http://www.myspace.com/onerepublic. Lyrically, I love them. But I don't really see them being as big as U2.

Ryan "the darkhorse" Star - Supernova will regret kicking him off

Supernova said he was the most evolved talent on the show but yet they kicked him off? I was devistated when they eliminated Ryan Star. It was a ridiculous call. If you asked me who should not still be there, it's Lukas. Man, he's goth material, not Supernova-like! Ryan's such a talented songwriter/musician/singer. I became a fan of him immediately when I heard his phenomenal performance of R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion. The video clip is at the right side of this page. Just click on it to watch.

So be it. Let Supernova make a mistake. Ryan's already departed from his band, Stage (Maverick Records) and since then pursue his solo career. And he's got some good stuff that will definitely capture the ears and hearts of fans which listen to Coldplay, Fiona Apple, and Ben Folds just to name a few to describe his genre. He's already been rumoured to be soon touring with brit, Corrine Bailey Rae.

Ryan's career WILL sail smooth. He's already having his share of publicity in the industry - opening for Avril Lavigne and Gavin DeGraw, toured with Bon Jovi and Chevelle, and hit many headlines.

His debut album, Songs From The Eye of the Elephant is a burst of intense talent (more than one will ever expect from Supernova). He performed one of his originals on the show - Back of Your Car. A song about making love as the world was coming to an end. The concept itself speaks his creativity. It's such an emotional song and you can just feel every single word in your bones. So Ordinary is gonna be another hit for its beautiful lyrics and great melody. Losing your Memory will haunt its mellow tune. Watch out for the bridge on this song...it's so so so passionate!

Ryan.....you deserve more than just being in a rock band like Supernova. You deserve to take on the music world.

Still Fantasy. Still King of Mando-pop.

Right. Right. He's back with his 6th, 7th album? 7th full-album I think. Yes, yes. Titled Still Fantasy, it'll be released on 8 September 2006. Sometimes I wonder if we'll ever get sick of his stuff. I mean you gotta admit it's all sappy love songs....but damn man he's a talented lyricist.

The significance of this album would be him teaming up with veteran Taiwanese singer, Fei Yu Ching (the dude who sang "The Song of the Republic of China"). I saw Fei on TV just a couple of days ago. He had this show where he performed a few numbers with many Chinese singers. Man, he can sing...a very technical singer from what I've heard. Both music giants will portay their talents in probably the first single of the album, A Thousand Miles Away (Qian Li Zhi Wai) which was premiered on August 23.

Well, I guess as always, the album's gonna be a hit. So keep a lookout!

The Panic Channel

Right. Just in case you didn't know...this outfit consists of 3 Jane's Addicton members and a fresh talent who used to be in Skycycle. Drumroll please..... Presentingggg Dave Navarro(guitar), Chris Chaney(bass), Stephen Perkins(drums), and Steve Isaacs!

The Panic Channel's debut album, (ONe) is out in stores now. It's said to be packed with variety of styles...and probably away from the experimental touch. Well, maybe a pinch of it, I feel.

Two singles out, one for the radio: Why Cry and one for the beloved internet: Teahouse of the Spirits. The latter being a more edgy track and sounding like a real race car song! Why Cry is my current favourite. It's ballad like. Vocally, dynamic. A similar number to that would be She Won't Last. I love the guitar works on this one. It's mesmerizing.

Leigh Nash out with debut album - Aug 15

The pretty face from Sixpence None the Richer finally gets a go at a solo debut album titled Blue on Blue this August 15. Leigh Nash is set to present her admirable voice with divine melodies. I’ve already listened to a couple of tracks from the album and, I’ve just got one word…"Beautiful!".

The album's got loads of piano and the tracks tend to be mellow. Good CD to be playing with candles lit and wine a when you’re all alone at home thinking or whatever. Lyrics were well written and with Pierre Marchand (worked with Sarah McLachlan) producing the album, it’s just gotta be one of those great ones.

Just a Little has that dreamy feel to it with the organs playing, sounding almost like a church hymn. It gets a bit boring after a while though.

Cloud Nine is a little more upbeat accompanied by piano. The good hook to the song makes it a sing-a-long.

My personal favourite is Blue, probably because of the bursting guitars and haunting melody of Leigh’s angelic voice.

Watch out for her first single which is already playing in US airwaves – My Idea of Heaven.

Nan Quan Ma Ma has got a colourful palette

OK! I've got another chinese music review. I'm kinda getting the hang of this.

So, here's a quartet fronted by female vocalist Lara (who is also a composer by the way) and backed by 3 talented dudes, Devon (drummer/DJ/Rapper), Yu Hao (Pianist/Rapper), and Zhang Jie (Guitarist). Their latest masterpice, Colour Palette was launched a couple of weeks ago and from what I've listened, it's not too bad. For those who love the sounds of Jay Chou, we'll you gotta get a hold of this album. Most of the tracks you hear are somehwat sinilar to Jay's style. After all, they are buddies of him and have been definitely influenced by Jay.

Track 2 on the album sounded like a Mayday/Jay Chou number. It's got a nice rythm to it. But my guess is, the hit will be Track 5 - it's mellow, dreamy, it's pleasant and easy. Among my other favourites are Track 7 & 12. However, don't expect any 'pick-me-up' tracks. They should've at least had one. Tsk Tsk.

The Return of the Dog

DMX returns with his 6th album, Year of the Dog...Again (due August 2006). 3 years since his last solo album, DMX is set to bring a more focused rap prophetic vision with singles like Lord Give Me A Sign, We In Here, and Give 'Em What They Want.

There was a delay in the album release due to a leak. Album leaks are getting viral these days, even Paris Hilton's singles were leaked several times before Stars are Blind became her single. Anyway, back to the Dog. We can expect some blistering hip hop numbers on this one. It's powerful, punchy and back to rap's roots. What else can you expect from a man that's the only artist to have the first 5 albums debut consecutively at #1 on the Billboard 200?

Hammer Me Timbers!

So he did it huh? The scary kid when screaming, Marty Casey managed to gain fame even after being placed only second in the INXS search. Let's just see now if Marty can lead the Lovehammers ahead of JD Fortune and INXS. I wouldn't be surprised, hearing how Marty Casey & The Lovehammers's second album (this ain't their first people) is so juiced with energy compared to INXS's Switch (no offense guys I still like your music).

First single - Trees. Simple lyrics, grungy, great sing along. More grungy works can be heard on Straight as an Arrow. My personal favourite so far is Rain on Brain. Now this number has got that modern rock touch to it.

John Mayer - All Blue-zy this September

John Mayer fans, be prepared for a bluesy album titled Continuum this September 12. He's had some time off, so this album had better be good. What was he doing for the past 2 years or so? Touring, touring, and more touring with Sheryl Crow and also his 'project-X': John Mayer Trio.

Continuum's first single, Waiting on the World to Change is already being embraced by airwaves all over. The track arrested me with its boppy tune. To be honest, great music, but I'm just not too sure if his soft vocals suit this whole new bluesy outfit. Well, we're yet too know...

Breaking the Norm of Taiwanese Music - Deep White

Alright. Here's my first ever Chinese music review. I was simply impressed when I heard a few tracks from this duo - DEEP WHITE ( 深白色 and 端妤 (主唱) ) otherwise known as Arys Chien & DY). Impressed simply because the musical arrangements were all done so nicely. And bear in mind that this is their first ever album and from the sounds of it, they planned it really well.

Moving along to what you will be listening to... I am confident to say that their self-titled album brings a fresh branding towards Taiwanese music. The track which stopped me at my tracks were the upbeat ones, namely, Nothing Wrong and That is Me - great guitars, sexy vocals, great beat. Then there are tracks that are accompanied by beautiful piano sounds like the one you'll find in I'm Cryin - I may not fully understand every chinese word there, but her sweet vocals just express it all in a way. And one more notable track is That Person (那個人).

We don't hear Arys on vocals much. Guess he's just one of those powerful but quite ones. After all, he has been writing songs for other artistes for quite some time. As for DY, I like her voice - unique & passionate. They're a perfect combo. Oh, and before I forget, this whole record was done by the both of them. Hats off to DEEP WHITE.

Pete Yorn Completes his Musical Trilogy

Come August 15, singer/songwriter Pete Yorn would've covered morning, day and night with his tunes. His final installment of a musical trilogy is completed with the release of Nightcrawler, following his last 2 albums - Music for the Morning After and Day I Forgot. He stays true to his musicality in this album. Dreamy, simple yet solid.

I doubt that he's a big person in Asia but some of you might have heard his songs in several movie soundtracks like Spiderman, Hellboy, and Shrek 2. I don't really fancy all of his tunes because it gets a little boring after a while, but I hope this new release turns things around for the better.

The Runaway Train's Coming Back This Summer

That's right, Soul Asylum's back with a spanking new album. THE SILVER LINING is expected to be swinging, soothing, and rocking like ever before. However, the death of bassist Karl Mueller last year has brought a new member to the band - Tommy Stinson.

Ferocious Ferry - August 8

L.E.F. - Loud, Electronic, Ferocious. That's exactly what it's all about in Ferry Corsten's latest offering to the avid trance movement. I had a chance to listen to the first single, Fire (feat. Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon) and I thought to myself if Ferry might be blending a popish-rockish twist to his new works. Perhaps, because you'll find collaborations with Howard Jones, Guru, Debra Andrew, just to name a few. All in all, I'd say this is his best so far. The energy is relived, pumped and defintely melodious.

"I say Ferry ol' chap....you had me at Fire!"

Other notable tracks are I Love You, Cubikated (this one sounds real raw!), Possession. Album's officially out on August 8, and this has booked a place on my CD collection with 7/10!

There, there goes Yorke!

Frontman from one of the best bands of my time, Radiohead's Thom Yorke is all set for his debut solo career with The Eraser hitting stores on July 2006. And from what I've heard so far, we're definitely in for some experimental and electronic creativity.

I must say, most tracks do have a touch of Radiohead's ingenuity.

After all, Yorke did say in an interview with The Rolling Stone that the basic ideas for this album were all in his laptop. And this was his cornerstone of manipulating sounds and open new gates to a new sound space.

All in all, The Eraser is a sumptuous one and well, good listening pleasure. It gets 6/10 in my books.

Even Angels Could Hear Them

Alright, so my review on this might be a little late. But as soon as I saw and listened to Angels and Airwaves on MTV, I was awestruck, and I'm definitely getting their debut album, WE DON'T NEED TO WHISPER (out 23 May 2006).

Tom and the boys have definitely brought alternative rock on to an epical journey with this fine offering. Their first single, The Adventure is already becoming a new anthem on the airwaves this year. It's a dreamy track racked with the energetic unison of riffs, beats, and lyrics that go "...and here we go life's waiting to begin...".

Followers of Tom DeLonge's previous side project, Box Car Racer would be pleased to know that The War has somewhat almost that similar kind of musicality. With raunchy guitars and quiet bars here and there.

This awesome foursome definitely have what it takes to step things up in the alternative scene. From the 3 tracks I've listened from http://www.myspace.com/angelsandairwaves, I give this album a 6.5/10.

17 and Genuine

Uprising singer/songwriter Dave Mellilo hails from a place not too far from Disneyland. Though, his new EP, TALK IS CHEAP goes nowhere near 'playful'. His songs show individuality of a spirited youth, and Knights of the Island Counter does just that as you feel each guitar strum and piano key dance with a beat that varies from time to time.

My personal fav would be track 3 - This is 2005. It's got a catchy hook due to beautiful piano orchestration that gels so well with his lyrics (about self discover perhaps). Not too say the rest of the tracks are bad or anything, but there's really nothing special about them.

But the track 3 & 4 has got what it takes to hit the charts (top 30 at least?). Out in CD on June 13, 2006. If you like the sounds of Teddy Geiger, then you'd like his offering.

This gets 5/10 in my books.

Hot Holly hits music stores June 6, 2006

You’ve heard her nightingale vocals on Fort Minor’s second single – Where’d You Go. Now, Holly Brook is out to prove that she’s not just a featured vocalist in someone else’s hit song.

Her debut album, LIKE BLOOD LIKE HONEY boasts melodic masterpieces with some sort of silent angst and a sense of renewal, all blended in perfectly well with her hypnotising vocals. Imagine Fiona Apple doing a duet with Sarah MacLachlan. Beauty isn’t it? Well, well, I honestly don’t know if she’ll be a one hit wonder or not? But with Linkin Park’s label, Machine Shop’s Recordings, I think she’ll be touring across the globe a couple of times.

Expect the pianos, slow jazzy beats here and there, and mellow tunes wrapped with a creeping energy. I could sense all that rushing in me as I close my eyes especially listening to Curious (I expect this to be the first single). It lyrically touched me and musically, it advocated my sense of seeking answers.

Heavy had me feel every ounce of her musicality. It takes you on a real ride with wonderful works on the piano with her passionate voice. Another track to look out for would be Wanted which I’d definitely want playing on my car stereo as I drive late at night. It’ll suit the ambience just right. It’s the kind of song that gets you thinking and reminiscing about certain moments.

All other tracks featured in this brilliantly produced album would get you right at the spot with a silent energy. She’s absolutely talented, a gorgeous red head, and definitely worth the attention.

Album hit stores 6 June, 2006. Holly Brook gets 8/10 on my list.
